ZAGREB, January 4, 2022 – Zagreb recorded 161,100 overnight stays by tourists in December 2021, an increase of 275% compared to December 2020 and a decrease of 36% compared to December 2019, the Zagreb City Tourist Board announced on Tuesday.

Around 74,300 tourists visited the Croatian capital last month, 422 percent more than in December 2020.

“Although we are still a few days away from the official closure of the Christmas and New Years events in Zagreb, the results achieved show that this transitional and hybrid edition of Advent Zagreb has attracted a large number of visitors. Zagreb is leading in terms of tourist results in Croatia, “said Martina Bienenfeld, director of the Zagreb City Tourist Board.

The Zagreb Advent Christmas Market and New Year’s events began on November 27th and end on January 7th.

Besides domestic tourists, most of the visitors came from Russia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany and Serbia, while most of the overnight stays were generated by Russians, followed by tourists from Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Italy.

A large number of Russian tourists are linked to vaccination against COVID-19 with vaccines that are not available in Russia and that are required for COVID passports for travel to EU countries.

A total of 639,100 tourists visited Zagreb in all of 2021, or 85% more than in 2020, which puts Zagreb at the top of all tourist destinations in Croatia. The number of overnight stays rose by 75% to 1.4 million, with tourists coming mainly from Croatia, Germany, the USA, Italy, Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Zagreb continued to grow in the first few days of the new year. On January 1st and 2nd, it recorded just over 3,000 tourist arrivals (+ 267% compared to the same two days in 2020) and 10,700 overnight stays (+ 305%).
