DETROIT – Three Michigan communities were featured on a list of 50 American cities with the highest levels of bed bug infestation.
Orkin recently released its list of Top 50 Bed Bug Cities 2022, which ranked Detroit No. 3, Flint No. 23, and Lansing No. 48. For the second year in a row Chicago topped the list.
Orkin based its ranking on data showing where the pest control company performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2020 to November 30, 2021.
“Last year, as travel picked up again in the US, troubled Americans – and bed bugs – drove across the country on a short vacation,” the company wrote in a statement attached to the list.
“When consumers plan to travel in 2022 amid the developing pandemic, it’s easy to forget that bed bugs are still a major threat. Given the shortage of staff in the hospitality industry, bed bug introductions may not be monitored as often as desired, so a careful investigation is essential. “
Orkin officials reported that both Detroit and Lansing were in the same position on the 2021 list. Meanwhile, Flint lost two places from last year.
“Bed bugs are a problem for everyone because they are master hitchhikers and travel home with people when they are unlikely to notice,” Ben Hottel, an orkin entomologist, said in a statement.
In his press release, Orkin outlined steps to prevent bed bugs from spreading while traveling, as well as tips on how to detect an infestation.
