It’s time to get our beds ready for this month’s transplants. We’re here at the raised beds joining me is Connor Witbeck from Dairy Doo, Morgan Composting and Andrea Bushre, NanBop Farm, Director of Operations.
This is a great example: we have a raised bed that needs soil. Now, because it’s so big we’ve put down a thick layer of Top Soil Blend. We just need to make it better for our vegetables.
Connor says to leave 8 to 10 inches of space to fill with the good stuff – Veggie Doo 301
We put down a layer of newspaper before adding the 301!
Here’s the reason why: “Even though our topsoil blend is very high-quality soil, it’s not totally weed free. We can’t guarantee that. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to put this layer and newspaper over top of that as a weed barrier.”
Andrea is not used to growing in a raised bed but she says it has advantages.
“The key with this is that you’re not having to weed as much all of your plants are contained in one area. And the other thing is that it keeps your it makes it so that you’re not as sore at the end of the day. So you’re up here it’s all level versus bending over and squatting all day.”
Veggie Doo 301 is very dry so be sure to add in a little moisture. Once it’s all in the bed, be sure to completely soak it.
