There are of course some downsides to sharing your bed with another creature, be it a human or an animal. The most obvious thing is that your sleep could be disrupted. Cats are nocturnal and dogs are polyphasic sleepers, which means they have about three sleep-wake cycles an hour at night, says Jerry Klein, the American Kennel Club’s chief veterinary officer. He also points out that having a natural watchdog tendency means your pooch will remain alert to noises and abnormal movements. And like any human bedfellow, they can snore or hog your part of the bed.
