No snoozing for AmeriCU volunteer bed-builders

During the day she acts as the AmeriCU Credit Union’s Creative Services Manager to create and maintain the big picture and atmosphere of AmeriCU, but at night Beth Park volunteers for Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a non-profit organization that builds beds and delivers them to children in need. Inspired by the mission of the national organization, Park and her five siblings founded a local chapter in Utica in July.

“When a sibling starts something, we all get involved,” joked Park. “We did a community creation, started fundraising, and started a volunteer base. Within six weeks we were delivering handmade beds to children who didn’t have one. “

As the proud sponsor of the Utica Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, AmeriCU staff and volunteers were eager to participate over a two-week period in October creating beds for children in the Utica area. As part of the sponsorship, the credit union also supplies the mattresses required for the beds made.

SHP has built and delivered 60 beds since July and hopes to deliver 40 more by the end of the year. While that’s an impressive number, Park said the demand is still there – SHP is backlog of more than 80 bed requests for local children in need.

“There is a demand that we ignored,” said Park. “Having a child sleeping on the floor or sharing a bed with a parent or sibling is incredible that we can meet this basic need for families in our community.”
