Kolkata: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Eastern regional bench of Justice B Amit Sthalekar (judicial member) and Prof A Senthil Vel (expert member) issued notices to KoPT (Shyama Prasada Mukherjee Port), department of water resources, river development and Ganga Rejuvenation and Central Water Commission and Bengal government for filing counter affidavit within three weeks against the gross indifference shown to the river erosion causing failing of trees along the bank of Botanic Garden.
“Since the existence of the garden is at stake, I carried out an investigation into how this erosion poses a threat to it,” said green crusader Subhas Datta, who filed the case. In his affidavit, Datta mentioned that the dredging of the river was specific for maintaining a navigable draft for vessels that carry goods along this national waterway-I and the dredged sludge, he alleged, is dumped elsewhere in the river bed.
