Del Norte County’s voters will take a first look at maps depicting new trust area boundaries as the local school district moves away from a generalized voting model.

The Del Norte Unified School District and the Del Norte County Office of Education, who share the same lines of jurisdiction and policy makers, will hold a joint public hearing on January 13th at 4pm.

From a DNUSD press release:

The Education Committee of the Del Norte County Unified School District (“District”) is currently elected on a “hybrid at-large” electoral system;
Members must reside in defined trustee areas, but are elected by voters for the entire district.

On August 12, 2021, the district board passed Resolution # D21-22-4, in which it declared its intention to move to trustee elections, in which each board member must reside within a specified trustee area boundary and is only elected by the voters within that trustee area Fiduciary area.

The district board members also serve as the Del Norte County Board of Education (“County Board”), which means that any change in the electoral method for the district executive board will result in a corresponding change in the electoral method for the county board. As a result, on August 12, 2021, the county board similarly passed Resolution # C21-22-2 declaring its intention to move to fiduciary elections.

On September 9 and September 23, 2021, the district and district boards held two joint public hearings to receive contributions from the municipality to the process of drawing up trust area maps in accordance with Electoral Act Section 10010, Subsection (a) (1).

Draft fiduciary boundary maps will soon be released by the district’s demographers for public consideration and will be available for review on the district’s website. It is hereby announced that, in accordance with Electoral Code Section 10010, Subsection (a) (2), the District Board and the District Board will hold a joint public hearing to obtain community input on these cards. The first of these two public hearings will take place as follows:

Date: Thursday, January 13, 2022
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: Del Norte County’s Unified School District
Boardroom of the education center
301 W. Washington Boulevard.
