Many in Canada were recently treated to a fireball lighting the night sky over a lake. Against the backdrop of a towering mountain in the province of British Columbia, the sight was spectacular. For a woman, however, it was a nightmare. As she slept through the quiet night in her house, a meteorite hit the roof and landed right next to her. The sound of the impact woke her and she felt the debris on her face. Confused, she looked around the house and found a stone that was neatly laid on her pillow.
The woman escaped death by inches. “I just jumped up and turned on the light, I couldn’t figure out what the hell had happened,” Ruth Hamilton told Victoria News.
After seeing the stone on her pillow where she normally lays her head on, she gathered up and called 911. Just a few miles to the east, near Lake Louise, a glacial lake and tourist hotspot, people had enjoyed the meteorite crashing the sky into a ball of fire. The incident occurred on October 4th.
A police officer arrived at Ms. Hamilton and investigated the possible causes of the rock landing. There was construction going on on a nearby Canyon project. However, the officer found no evidence that the stone came from there and ended up on the house as a result of an explosion. The only possible explanation the official found was that a meteorite had penetrated Ms. Hamilton’s roof, the news website reported.
“I was shaking and scared when it happened, I thought someone jumped in or it was a gun or something. It’s almost a relief when we realized it could only have fallen from the sky, ”she added.
“I was in shock and just sat shivering for a few hours,” Ms. Hamilton told the Toronto Star. “The likelihood of that happening is so slim that I’m pretty grateful to be alive.”
Ms. Hamilton said she plans to keep the rock as her grandchildren think it’s pretty cool. She also says that the harrowing experience gave her a new perspective on life – it’s precious and she doesn’t want to take it for granted again.
The insurance company will look into whether the damage to her home can be covered, she said, adding that the company has never faced such a claim before.
