Louisville developer has sights set on building 24-bed hotel in west Louisville

It would be a first in west Louisville, but one local developer said he’s ready to make history. Gil Holland has announced he plans to bring a two-story hotel to the Portland neighborhood. The hotel, called the Devonian, a 24-bedroom, two-story, 17,000 square-foot structure on Lytle street, in between 16th and 17th streets. However, Holland said there’s just one thing holding the project back from starting, money.” We got to get it financed,” Holland said. “We don’t want to have another project announced for west Louisville that doesn’t happen, because we’ve seen that.”So for Holland, his course of action now is simple. He said he’ll be working round the clock to raise the $5 million needed to make his newest project a reality. “I just started thinking,” Holland said. “When people in Portland have friends visiting from out of town, and need to put them in a hotel, there’s no neighborhood hotel.”According to the Louisville Hotel Association’s records, there are more than 50 hotels in the city of Louisville. None of those hotels are west of 9th Street.”West Louisville should have the same attributes, and civil furnishing that east Louisville has,” said metro council president David James. James said he welcomes the idea of the city helping out financially for the project , calling it a one-time contribution that would translate into more success for the area.”It just helps with the whole environment,” James said. “You go visit people in one part of the city, west Louisville, and there’s no hotel for you to be able to stay it, it kind of tells you about that area.”It’s why Holland calls it a prime spot, because it’ ll help not just those traveling to Louisville, but those living there as well.”There’s not a lot of a lot of opportunities for people to come spend their money in the neighborhood,” Holland said. “There’s not enough job opportunities for some of the folks in the neighborhood. We want to help provide both.” Holland said if he’s able to receive the $5 million he needs, construction will begin in the spring. He said, in a perfect world, the hotel could be up and running by late 2024.
