Lens On Specially-abled Staff In Assam Edu Dept | Guwahati News

Guwahati: Amid reports of academicians holding fake certificates, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked the state education department to screen the specially-abled employees who were appointed last year.
education minister Ranoj Pegu said there is suspicion that some have got the jobs without requisite disability level or qualifications.
The state government last week distributed appointment letters to 280 specially-abled candidates as school teachers after they cleared medical board screening. pegu on Monday revealed that initially, around 650 specially-abled candidates were selected for the teachers’ jobs but more than half of them could not clear the medical board screening.
“We have started the process to check attempts to get government jobs in the education department with fake documents. Those who have already got jobs with forged certificates won’t be spared either. The chief minister has directed us to ask persons with disabilities, who were appointed in the education department last year, to go through screening again,” Pegu told media persons here on Monday.
He said not only will the certificates of the specially-abled candidates be screened but they will have to face the medical board according to the CM’s directive.
Assam higher education directorate has already summoned 70 individuals, working as tutor principals, teachers and librarians, to appear before a screening committee to check their credentials on Tuesday. Some of them were allegedly holding fake PhDs, education department sources said.
For the first time in Assam, the state education department last Tuesday appointed 280 specially-abled candidates after they successfully faced the medical board, earning eligibility for teaching in government schools. They had a disability level of 40% and onwards. While 193 candidates have been appointed in lower primary, 75 candidates have been appointed in upper primary and 12 got appointed as science teachers in upper primary schools.
Pegu said the education department also detected some fake BEd and diploma in elementary education (D.El.Ed.) certificates a few days ago, which were procured by some candidates.
Following disappointing performance by the government schools in this year’s Class X board exams, the education department cracked the whip on teachers, engaged in other licensed professions by violating service rules, even after drawing salary from the government exchequer.
