Kerala SET in July, registrations to close on April 20 | Career and campus

The registration for Kerala’s State Eligibility Test (SET) for those aspiring to be teachers in higher secondary and vocational higher secondary schools has begun. The applications can be submitted till 5am on April 20. The examination, which will be held at 14 centres, is scheduled in July. Lal Bahadur Shastri Center for Science and Technology, an autonomous body under the state government, will conduct the examinations.

Those who clear the test are deemed qualified for appointment as teachers in higher secondary schools. In the higher vocational secondary stream, the SET qualifiers are considered for non-vocational subjects.

The application fee for the general category is Rs 1,000. The fee for differently-abled and Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates is Rs 500. The application fee has to be paid online.

Exam pattern

The SET examination written will include two papers: Paper 1 consists of General Knowledge and teaching aptitude questions, while Paper 2 will be on a specialized subject (out of a list of 31 subjects).

Each paper consists of 120 questions which need to be answered in 120 minutes. Each question carries one mark. Mathematics and Statistics papers, however, have 80 questions and carry 1.5 marks each. There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

Minimum marks required

Candidates belonging to each category have to get the required marks prescribed under each category to get the SET eligibility.

General: Those in the general category have to get a combined minimum mark of 48% and a separate minimum of 40% for each paper.

Backward Class: Those belonging to the Backward Class category have to get a combined minimum mark of 45% and a separate minimum of 35% for each paper.

SC/ST/differently-abled: Those coming under the SC/ST/differently-abled categories have to get a combined minimum mark of 40% and a separate minimum of 35% for each paper.

Eligibility

Candidates must have acquired a post-graduate degree in the subject concerned with not less than 50% marks or equivalent grade.

A B.Ed degree in any discipline from any one of the universities in Kerala or equivalent qualification acquired from any other recognized university.

For the subjects, Anthropology, Commerce, Gandhian Studies, Geology, Home Science, Journalism, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology and Statistics, candidates need not acquire B.Ed degree for applying for the SET.

Candidates who have acquired DLEd/ LTTC in Arabic, Urdu, or Hindi subjects but do not have a B.Ed degree are also eligible to apply for the SET examination.

Candidates who have acquired their qualification through correspondence courses/open universities which are not recognized by any one of the universities in Kerala are not eligible to appear for the SET examination.

Candidates who have acquired their PG degree with the minimum required marks for the SET and are now undergoing the final-year courses for B.Ed degree are eligible to appear for the test. Similarly, candidates who have acquired their B.Ed degree and are undergoing the final-year courses of their PG program are also eligible to appear for the test.

Such candidates must produce the certificates of their qualifying examinations with the minimum required marks within one year from the date of publication of the results of the test, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.

There is no upper age limit for candidates. The SC/ST and differently-abled candidates have a 5 percent mark exemption.
