‘I put my baby to bed at midnight – people judge but it’s convenient for me’

A mom has split opinions on TikTok after revealing she puts her baby to bed at midnight because it’s “convenient” for her – but some people think she’s “selfish”.

She announced that she would put her baby to bed at midnight

It can take some time to find a bedtime routine that will work for your baby.

Some parents are lucky enough to let their babies sleep through the night while others wake up every hour.

But a woman who shared what works for her baby has divided opinions online.

Mother of two Victoria shared a video on TikTok (@toriyav) detailing the things she does with her baby that others may find weird, like getting her to bed at 12 noon.

This encouraged someone to ask, “Is there a reason you put her to bed at 12 noon?”

Victoria responded to the question in a follow-up video.

“Why I put my baby to bed at 12 noon,” she says in the clip, which has now been viewed more than 2.2 million times.

“I never understood why parents put their babies to bed at 7 p.m.,” she says.

“It just means that you wake up at 7am when you have a full 12 hours of sleep.

“And as parents who stay at home, it’s not very necessary.

“As long as the baby has the amount of sleep they need, the time you put them in bed doesn’t matter. This is a man made thing.

“So she sleeps from noon to 1pm and that works for our family.”

Since it was released, the video has received nearly 80,000 likes and 5,200 comments from people who were divided about the idea.

The people were divided

One person said, “Yes, no, babies are not made for this … it’s your job as a parent to make sure they’re getting a healthy sleep schedule, and it’s not.”

Another wrote, “So basically you made a decision to give the baby an unhealthy teenager’s cycle so that you don’t have to be a parent for the first six hours of the day.”

A third commented: “And when do you have time for your husband if he doesn’t go to bed until midnight?”

Someone else said, “You are now setting your circadian rhythm for the rest of your life, it’s not about what’s comfortable for you.”

Circadian rhythms are 24-hour cycles that are part of the body’s internal clock and that run important functions and processes in the background, says Parenting Science, with one of the most important and well-known circadian rhythms being the sleep-wake cycle.

Many other TikTokers agreed with Victoria and admitted that they are doing the same thing as her.

One said, “90 percent of the moms on these comments are just crazy because they woke up at 6 a.m. this morning.” [sic].

“Only important if you have to attend school. You make you mom, “said a second user.

While a third TikToker commented, “Please normalize this. 1,000,000% agree that we don’t have to adjust to society’s schedules.”

Victoria addressed criticism in a follow-up video in which she assured viewers that there was nothing wrong with her daughter’s circadian rhythm.

She said, “Bedtime is a social construct and the ‘circadian rhythm’ only exists because of society. You don’t have to get your children to bed at 8:00 pm to be successful.”
