The bed is the heart of any room, and the linens are the most important part. Bedding includes sheets, pillow cases, blankets or comforters, duvet covers, and bed runners.
But did you know that while your bed looks clean, it is covered in dust, dirt and other debris? Unclean bed linen can cause breathing problems and impaired vision.
Long breaks between laundry washes …
Ideally, you should wash your sheets and pillowcases after a week of use. However, this is a general estimate and will not apply to all users, regions, climates, etc.
In fact, some houses get more dust than others. Some beds suffer from pests. The environment to which the bed linen is exposed and the frequency with which it is used will affect its hygiene.
Here’s how to keep your bedding clean between washes
How can you prevent dust, hair and skin cells, dust mites, and other contaminants from building up in your bedding? Here’s how:
* Vacuum daily: Vacuuming sheets, pillowcases and duvet / Dohar regularly will remove most surface impurities. A vacuum cleaner is especially useful for vacuuming dust mites, dandruff, and dead skin off of bed linen. Vacuum the mattress too. However, mattresses need to be cleaned thoroughly every month: sprinkle a mixture of baking soda and essential oil on the mattress. Wait 15 minutes before you start vacuuming.
* Use a lint roller to remove hair and dead skin: Hair becomes embedded in the sheets and pillowcases. Just run a lint roller over the sheets and pillowcases. Ditto for the quilt or duvet. If you don’t have a lint roller, wrap masking tape or packing tape around your palm and remove any embedded hair.
* Steam the leaves: Dust mites bite the skin and cause breathing problems. Washing with cold water does not kill them. Get rid of the infestation in two steps: use a steam iron over the bedding to kill the mites (heat kills them and destroys their eggs). Next, wash the treated bed linen with an antibacterial detergent.
If you clean the surface contaminants as described above, you don’t need to wash your bedding in hot water. Hot water loosens the fibers of the bedding and the fabric begins to pill. Colors also fade faster.
It is usually sufficient to wash the treated bed linen in the washing machine with a high-quality detergent and antibacterial laundry.
