Govt. mulls 5G test bed roll-out in early January

The government plans to roll out a 5G test stand in early January so that small and medium-sized businesses and other industry players can test their solutions on a working platform, a senior Telecommunications Department official said Thursday.

In order to promote the domestic 5G technology, the DoT approved an inter-institute cooperation project to set up a 5G test bed with a total cost of 224 billion yen in March 2018. A test environment consists of a specific environment, including hardware, software, operating system, and network configuration, to test a product or service.

“Another effort that we have made in the recent past is to set up a 5G test field. We hope to launch this 5G test stand in early January, which will enable SMBs and other parts of the industry to test their solution on a working platform, ”said DoT Secretary K. Rajaraman at the India Mobile Congress. Currently, the DoT has allocated frequencies for 5G tests to Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and MTNL.
