Goa to set up 300-bed mother and childcare unit under central scheme

Panaji: The state government has identified land close to the Goa Medical College’s super-speciality block to construct a 300-bed mother and childcare unit. The new facility is aimed at enabling a mother whose baby is in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) to be with the baby. “A baby has to be kept in the NICU if it is born prematurely. Even if delivered at a district hospital or sub-district hospital, such a baby is brought to us (GMC) for better care. However, at present, there is no facility for the mother to stay in the hospital with the baby and she has to sit outside the NICU, which draws us flak,” GMC dean Dr SM Bandekar said. Bandekar said in even cases of a C-section, a mother is discharged within four to five days of delivery, but her premature baby is kept in the NICU till such time that the doctors feel the need. “The project is coming up under the central scheme for an integrated unit wherein the mother and child will be together. Forty per cent of the project cost will be borne by the Centre,” he said. While the project was earlier estimated to cost Rs 100 crore, Bandekar said the cost is likely to escalate due to the delays suffered over the past few years. The entire obstetrics and gynaecology department of the tertiary care hospital will function out of the new facility once it is ready. Health minister Vishwajit Rane in his recent visit to Delhi had spoken to senior officials of the Union health ministry to reprocess the file so that the project can be taken forward without further delay, he added.
