A FORMER Southampton car showroom is one step closer to becoming an 80-bed care home.

The final stages are unfolding to transform the Doves Vauxhall showroom and workshops on The Avenue into assisted living flats and a care home.

The plans were approved in August this year to build 66 extra care flats and a four-story care home with 80 rooms.

Demolition work has already begun at the site, which has seen the showroom and garage ripped down to make room for the new development.

The plans were submitted by UK’s leading retirement home developer McCarthy Stone and were approved by Southampton City Council.

Now plans have been submitted to finalize what materials will be used, the external appearance, and the plan for nitrates.

The plans propose that no construction will take place until materials and the overall appearance have been approved.

The documents state that work will start after detailed drawings showing glazing, window recess, upstand panels, green wall frame, parapet detailing, roof construction and roof drainage are submitted to the local planning authority.

The existing Vauxhall building is set to be demolished to make way for the proposed development.

Developers will erect a block of assisted living flats, which they say would provide the opportunity for a “high-quality development” that would “positively contribute” to meeting the specialized accommodation needs of the elderly.

This block would address The Avenue and Bannister Road frontage.

It is also set to build a care home which would be located on the Bannister Road frontage.

The care home would be delivered by a partner care provider and provide 24-hour staffed enhanced care, with communal and amenity spaces, including a hairdressers, a cinema room, bar/activity rooms, lounge, multi-function rooms and dining spaces.

Parking would be delivered in the form of 65 spaces for residents, visitors, which would include disabled bays and electric vehicle charging points.

McCarthy and Stone Management Services will manage the Assisted Living accommodation.

Care UK, the likely developer of the care home, is one of the largest providers of residential care for older people.
