Dilapidated garages could be transformed into trendy one-bed flats

A number of garages attached to a block of flats could be converted into trendy ‘studio’ apartments.

The garages are on the ground floor of one block at Singleton Court, Bury Old Road, Prestwich.

Applicant Mr M. Moore has applied to Bury Council for planning permission to create four ground floor apartments.

A design and access statement in support of the plans said: “The proposed apartments will all be in the converted garages.

“The apartments will not be visible from the street scene along Bury Old Road or Singleton Road and will have very little impact on the surrounding area.

“The proposal will improve the overall appearance of the building’s rear facade which, like many garage and storage areas, has been forgotten and not well maintained.

“The plan includes the conversion of the middle two garages, located below the gap between the buildings, as storage space for the planned apartments.

“Each of the proposed dwellings conforms to the minimum floor areas for a one-bed, single-storey dwelling as required by nationally described space standards.

“The proposal is a good example of positively increasing the development capacity of already developed areas within the district.

“The site is in a highly sustainable location that supports optimized residential densities in a well-connected location.

“The site’s unique characteristics and prime location make it an ideal opportunity for an increased number of dwellings.”

The application said it did not include a private area for the apartments due to site restrictions.

The statement mentioned nearby parks and open spaces such as Broughton Park and Heaton Park.

The scheme is separate from a previously submitted scheme for converting the roof space into five new one-bedroom apartments on the same block.

Planners in Bury will decide on the plans in the coming weeks.
