COVID Omicron New York Update: 40 hospitals stop elective surgeries due to low bed capacity

NEW YORK (WABC) – Dozen of New York hospitals have been ordered to suspend elective surgery due to low bed capacity.

The New York State Department of Health announced on Saturday that it would order the 40 hospitals, mainly in the central and western regions, to suspend non-essential, non-urgent elective surgeries after reaching the state’s low-capacity facility threshold.

The order stipulates that affected hospitals must refuse this type of procedure for at least two weeks.

“We will use every available tool to ensure that hospitals can cope with the COVID-19 winter surge,” said the state’s acting health commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett.

It does so amid a surge in COVID hospital admissions across the state.

On Saturday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul reported a total of 11,843 hospitalizations for COVID, up from 295.

New York also reported a statewide positivity rate of 21.17% along with 90,132 positive COVID cases.

Hochul urged parents to get their children vaccinated, saying it was key to helping reverse the winter COVID surge along with the vaccine and booster.

“Our vaccination rate in children is still too low. Parents and guardians don’t hesitate to vaccinate and booster their children if they are eligible. It’s safe and widespread, ”said Hochul. “This is one of the best ways to keep our numbers down, wear a mask, and stay home when sick.”
