Covid-19 Watch: 571 new cases, nationwide ICU bed usage at 66.3pc

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 571 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday (Jan 5), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 5,028,794 infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry’s KKMNow portal reported that 570 of Thursday’s new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while one imported infection was logged.

Recoveries outpaced new infections, with 696 patients recovering on Thursday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,980,364 since the pandemic began.

The portal also reported that there were 11,564 active cases currently in the country, with 10,945, or 94.6%, observing home quarantine.

The KKMNow portal reported that 619 patients, or 5.35% of the total, were currently admitted to hospital for treatment. The number of Covid-19 patients warded at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country stands at 38, with 18 of these patients requiring ventilation support.

The ICU utilization rate nationwide stood at 66.3%, with 11 states or localities recording ICU usage rates of more than 60%.

Putrajaya had the highest ICU utilization rate at 92.9%, followed by Kelantan (84.9%), Selangor (75.4%), Johor (75%), Terengganu (70.7%), Kuala Lumpur (69.6%), Sabah (69.3%), Kedah (68.3%), Melaka (66.1%), Negri Sembilan (65.3%) and Perak (63.2%).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry’s GitHub data repository reported that seven Covid-19 deaths were reported on Thursday with two classified as Brought in Dead (BID).

This brings the death toll to 36,866.
