Covid-19 Watch: 1,352 new cases on May 2, nationwide ICU bed usage at 50.2%

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 1,352 new Covid-19 cases on Monday (May 2), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 4,450,859 infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry’s CovidNow portal reported that 1,348 of Monday’s new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while four imported infections were logged.

Recoveries continued to outpace new infections, with 6,074 patients recovering on Monday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,378,864 since the pandemic began.

The portal also reported that there were 36,440 active cases currently in the country, with 35,439, or 97.3%, observing home quarantine and five individuals admitted to low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

The CovidNow portal reported that 996 patients, or 2.73% of the total, were currently admitted to hospital for treatment. The number of Covid-19 patients warded at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country stands at 66, with 44 of these patients requiring ventilation support.

The ICU utilization rate nationwide stood at 50.2%, with four states or localities recording ICU usage rates of more than 60%.

Kedah had the highest ICU utilization rate at 74%, followed by Kuala Lumpur (72.2%), Johor (62.3%) and Kelantan (62%).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry’s GitHub data repository reported that five Covid-19 deaths were reported on Monday, of which one was classified as brought-in-dead (BID).

This brings the death toll to 35,555.
