Bed-Stuy’s Own ‘Fashion Week’ Could Launch Next Year

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN – Go over, Manhattan.

A long-standing non-profit organization in Bed-Stuy is hoping to start the district’s own “Fashion Week”, which will take place next August.

The Fashion Festival – organized by the Performing Arts Organizing Non-Stop Production Youth – this week kicked off a search for venues, designers and other contributors for the four-day event.

“The Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn has always had its own unique fashion style,” said the organizers. “From churches to malls, from jazz to hip-hop, Bed-Stuy has a history of artists, entrepreneurs and venues that changed the face of fashion in Brooklyn.”

The event is the youngest initiative of NSP Jugend, which has been running since 1983 and offers opportunities for “inner-city youth” in the fields of drama, art and design, music, fashion, dance and leadership.

For Fashion Week, NSP is hoping to put together a series of fashion shows in multiple locations from August 3-6, culminating in a closing show and awards ceremony.

So far, the organization plans to specifically honor two fashion entrepreneurs: Eunika Simmons from Young Gods Fashions and 11-year-old Yaa-lee Mensah from Yaa-lee’s Closet, according to the organization.
