A British Army sergeant who sexually abused a colleague’s girlfriend while the couple slept in bed together has been sentenced to four years in prison and has been discharged from the military.

Sergeant Deswarao Gunputh groped the young woman from the end of a bed where she slept with her boyfriend after a drunken night.

He initially fled the room when the woman “woke up in the haze”, but was finally arrested because of his “stiff” hair with “too much product”.

A trial in Bulford Military Court, Wiltshire, heard that Sgt Gunputh had taken tequila shots with the colleague and girlfriend before heading to Ipswich, Suffolk for more drinks.

They later returned to Wattisham Airfield, where the incident took place.

The woman, a civilian in her twenties, told the court she was “shocked” when she woke up at 2:00 am to feel someone molest her and see her boyfriend sleeping soundly next to her.

She recalled feeling “spiky” hair that was later identified by DNA testing as Sgt Gunputh.

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said, “Me and [my boyfriend] went back to his block … I don’t remember going to bed for drinking.

“I was awakened by the feeling that someone was touching me. It was uncomfortable, strange and unsettling … I wasn’t fully awake and woke up in a daze.

‘I noticed [my boyfriend] was next to me, so there must have been a third person in the room. I had reached out to search and touched her hair.

‘[The hair felt] if someone used too much product … it was almost stiff, like hay. [The room] was really dark – I opened my eyes but couldn’t see anything.

“They jumped back and left the room and I heard a door close. After the person left I was really confused.

The woman tried to wake her boyfriend, but he slept soundly, the court heard.

Then she noticed that her ‘pants were only on one leg’ and went to check the corridor before locking the door to the room.

“I went to the bathroom and just remembered sitting on the floor and crying,” added the victim.

Her friend reported the incident the next morning.

The court heard that it was Sgt Gunputh’s “spiky” hair that she was feeling, and his DNA was found on the victim.

Sgt Gunputh of the 1st Army Air Corps Regiment denied piercing the woman with his fingers, insisted that she “flirt” with him at night, claiming his DNA was transferred to her when they “held hands” .

However, he was found guilty of sexual assault through penetration on Wednesday.

He was imprisoned for four years and released from the army.
