Akron man convicted of fatally shooting sleeping victim in bed

AKRON, Ohio — A jury on Tuesday convicted an Akron man accused of shooting his mother’s boyfriend as the victim was sleeping.

Donnell Lawson, 29, was found guilty of two counts of murder, one count of felonious assault and having a weapon under disability, according to Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh.

Prosecutors say that on Nov. 20, 2019, Lawson shot Melvin Peters, 64, in the back as Peters was sleeping at a home on Cordova Avenue in the West Akron neighborhood.

Lawson is scheduled to be sentenced on July 19.
