A family from Abbeville is at the hospital asking for help for their loved ones.
Throughout the pandemic, healthcare providers have warned about straining the healthcare system, and now one family in Acadiana is feeling the effects.
Your loved one does not have Covid but needs a bed in intensive care.
According to the LDH, about 87% of the beds in the intensive care unit are occupied here in Region 4.
We know from the two major hospitals that many of them are being treated for Covid.
The patient hospitalized at Abbeville General requires a bed in the intensive care unit with a neurologist on staff.
The hospital is trying to get the family help at other facilities in the area and out of state, but so far without success.
“Your hands are tied, you’ve done everything you can. There’s no neurologist here.”
Sheba Lewis, 44, was in a medically induced coma at Abbeville General Hospital for almost two weeks after suffering a seizure.
Lewis received medical attention but her family says she is not feeling better.
“They don’t get the results they need because there are no neurologists here. They kept her here, made her comfortable, gave her medication, called all over Louisiana from here to Texas. They can’t find a hospital to put them in,” said Lewis’ aunt Beulah Batiste.
Abbeville General administrators confirm they are working to find Lewis an intensive care unit bed at a facility that employs a neurologist.
“Abbeville General Hospital has been a great, outstanding service. Unfortunately they have contact with 25 hospitals in Texas, 23 hospitals in Louisiana and not one available bed in an ICU that employs a neurologist and that’s what we’re looking for. Unfortunately due to COVID all beds are occupied by Covid patients,” said Lewis’ sister Twla Lewis.
We have reached out to Our Lady of Lourdes and Ochsner, both of whom confirm their intensive care units are being pushed to capacity mainly because of Covid.
Ochsner even says they don’t have a single bed available in the intensive care unit.
