Three men entered the elderly woman’s home in Bentley, Walsall, through the back door on Wednesday.
They pulled the woman out of her bed and mistakenly told her there was an explosion.
She was then taken downstairs while they were ransacking her home and finally escaped with her cash at around 9 p.m.
The woman was taken to the hospital for examination and was shocked by the incident.
No one has been arrested and officials are now asking for help in finding the thieves.
Police say officers recorded testimony from people in the area, conducted forensics and examined video footage from surveillance cameras.
A West Midlands police spokesman said, “Please take the time to speak to elderly neighbors and relatives about their safety and things they need to do to stay safe.
“Come by to see if they are okay, keep an eye out for any suspicious activity near their homes, and give us a call if something is wrong.”
