$ 41 million Mary Free Bed rehab facility opens at Covenant Healthcare

SAGINAW, Michigan (WYRT) – Two years in development and the time has finally come.

Great Lakes Bay area rehabilitation patients are moving into new homes.

Covenant Healthcare opens its 93,000 square foot Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Center.

The $ 41 million hospital will provide state-of-the-art technology, therapy and medical care to patients in need of rehab services.

This new facility has 60 private adult rooms, designated areas for patients with complex medical needs and problems, and around 150 inpatient staff on hand to provide this care.

“This treadmill is live action. So if this video shows bumps on the road or along a path, it simulates it so our patients can have a real experience outside of the hospital, ”said Jenny Spyhalski, Admin. Asst. at Mary Free Bed at Covenant Healthcare.

A patient-centered approach is what can be found in Covenant Healthcare’s new Mary Free Bed rehab facility.

In addition to 60 private rooms, there are specialized therapy gymnastics, ambulance technology in corridors and gyms, outpatient therapy areas, social rooms, to name just a few, on each floor.

But when patients arrive, they are more than just a patient.

“The patients here feel like part of the family. I’m very proud to be a co-worker here and I think you can stop anyone who works here and they can tell you the same thing, ”said Spyhalski.

Fred Beythan Jr. was at another Mary Free Bed facility in the state, but the new facility is a little closer to home for him. He will be staying here for a few days receiving IV fluids and other therapies while he recovers from an unknown illness.

“They have fantastic new equipment, the rooms are fantastic, I don’t share them with anyone,” Beythan said.

So not only does he feel good about the care he’s receiving, he also knows that the people who are responsible for his care are 100% involved in their work, and he says it shows.

“I actually came in and it was the first time in three years that I was on the parallel bars. I haven’t run for three years and they let me run again,” said Beythan.

There is sure to be great news to hear.

Mary Free Bed is a nationally recognized, nonprofit organization specifically focused on patient rehabilitation.

They are based in Grand Rapids, but provide inpatient and outpatient services in more than two dozen other communities, including here in central Michigan.
